Einat Amir
Einat Amir (born 1979, Jerusalem) is an artist living and working in Tel Aviv. == Themes == Amir’s work combines film and video installation with performance, whose work examines socio-political issues through the framework of psychoanalytic practice. Her video and performance-based work confronts audiences with staged interventions and situations that cross fiction with reality, while simultaneously “interrogating social and political conventions by probing the interface between audience and actor, self and other.” Amir has appeared in some of her own works, but also she utilizes actors and willing audience to participants to engage in often structured interactions in controlled environments, “facilitating social experimentation” in order to challenge societal norms for both the participants in the project and the viewers of the work. More specifically speaking, her earlier works are more reflective on issues of gender and self-representation. While more recent works focus on power relations structured via societal norms and their effects on the individual, individuality, and identity. The early works primarily focused on Einat, speaking to her own lived experience as a gay artist living and working in Israeli society. Finding the experience of her own self to be limiting after a period of time, she turned toward incorporating other people into her work – trading in an element of controlled experience for the freedom of the participants to “be who they are, or who they choose to be in the moment, within the frame of each piece.” The resultant work captures the intricacies and eccentricities of each human experience, while encapsulating the universal truths of what it is to be a person in contemporary society.
